Limestone deposits can undergo metamorphism during major geological events resulting in a recrystallizing as marble. Oolitic limestone consists of substantial amounts of "oolites" or "ooliths." Oolites are small spherical or sub-spherical grains of concentric calcite.


Except for calcareous cave and spring deposits, almost all limestone formations in Missouri contain a few fossils of animals which lived in the ocean, and therefore Missouri limestones are considered marine in origin. They offer evidence for the very interesting land-sea changes which this state has undergone in the geologic past.

Western Missouri is a diverse country. The Ozark mountains give way to the great plains here. Her early years were spent under a great inland sea which gradually waned and ebbed leaving limestone and sandstone in nearly every township.


However, most of these deposits eroded away at the end of the Devonian Period, leaving very few samples of Devonian limestone in Missouri. Another characteristic of Devonian time is the presence of the Chattanooga Shale, which formed from partially decomposed plant debris (as plants began to appear in abundance on land in Devonian Land).
